Support the Climate and Nature Bill
Tearfund are asking christians to contact their MP to encouage them to vote for the upcoming Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill. The Bill is an opportunity to make history and deliver the bold, science-led legislation we need. You can find out how to contact our local MP Blair McDougall here. There is a template email that can be copied and sent directly to his office, and it takes no longer than 5 minutes.
Here’s how the CAN Bill can help us stand with our global neighbours who are most affected by the climate and nature crises...
Communities living in poverty are hit hardest by the climate and nature crises
The climate crisis poses a life-threatening challenge to all of us, but particularly to the communities who are least responsible for it – people who live in poverty in low- and middle-income countries, our global neighbours. At its heart, the climate issue is a justice issue.
We want to speak up alongside many of the communities we serve to tackle the worsening effects of climate change and protect God’s creation together.
While the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill is a proposed UK law, it provides a pathway for the UK to meet international commitments on climate and nature, and support global communities suffering from the impacts of climate breakdown.
The CAN Bill is a joined-up, science-led plan for climate and nature
We support the CAN Bill because it helps make sure that the UK reduces its climate impact and protects a natural world where everyone can thrive. It is about the UK government taking responsibility for our part in the global climate crisis.
The CAN Bill is vital to the UK reaching our 2030 climate targets under the Paris Agreement, as well as:
- addressing the nature crisis by protecting and restoring vital ecosystems
- taking responsibility for our overseas emissions
- ensuring no one is left behind in tackling the climate and nature crises, especially those living in poverty
The UK Climate Change Act of 2008 was a historic piece of legislation which led the way around the world; we can do this again with the CAN bill!
