Talking Points - mission in action
🌟 Case Study: Sylvia’s Story 🌟
In January 2024, a family from Milton Keynes reached out to Talking Points East Renfrewshire for support with their 92-year-old mother-in-law,
Sylvia had lost her husband a few years earlier to Alzheimer’s She was very lonely and needed both practical support and companionship.
💬 “We were so impressed from the outset with the advice and support offered by Talking Points.”
👉 How we helped:
• We provided the family with information on local activities and arranged an introductory visit with a volunteer befriender.
• To ease concerns about shopping, we arranged both a shopping/delivery service and regular volunteer visits for companionship.
• Sylvia took part in local activities, including attending the Soup at St Andrews Group at Barrhead St Andrew's Parish Church.
• We also kept in regular contact with Sylvia and her family to check how things were going, and offered support when her care needs changed.
💜 The impact:
The family described the change as “amazing.” Before, Sylvia rarely wanted to go out, and conversations were difficult. After support began, she was happier, more engaged, arranging hair appointments, and even going out for coffee and shopping with her son.
At the group at St Andrews Church, Sylvia even reconnected with an old friend, exchanging numbers and rekindling companionship.
💬 “The impact on our family was huge. The distance between us and Sylvia was a strain, but seeing this transformation brought comfort and relief. We knew we could trust this kind and caring organisation.”
Sadly, Sylvia passed away in June 2024.
Her family told us that thanks to Talking Points, "her final months were filled with connection, joy, and dignity".
🌟 “We cannot thank Talking Points enough for their time and support. The last five months of Sylvia’s life were very happy, and that means the world to us.”
